Robin Hood the Antihero

Robin Hood, the object of fascination for many young children. Robin Hood, champion of the poor; the thief with "good intentions".

The story of Robin Hood is jam packed with noble and humane overtones. However, who’s more noble, the person that through his own effort, hard work, passion and dedication built himself up? Is the person with an undeserved sense of entitlement nobler than the former? Are those who pass the responsibility for their own well being to the few productive members of society nobler?

Who are the real victims? The rich or the poor? It seems to me that we’re living in this very same legend/nightmare today. Social security--- Robin Hood; Government Health Care--- Robin Hood; Public School Systems--- Robin Hood. Is social security not a redistribution of wealth? Is the government not TAKING (taxing) from the productive members of this nation to support those who either lack the will or the ambition to support themselves? These programs are full blown hand-outs which miserably fail to effectively motivate these people to become productive.

The same goes for government health care. Why should I have to pay for Joe’s gastric bypass surgery? I don’t know Joe. I would never lend him 20 dollars let alone give them to him. Why is it my responsibility that Joe should need this surgery when he was stuffing his face with government cheese? The country seems to be captivated by the idea that taking care of each other is the utopian ideal. Except the only ones who seem to be chanting “brotherhood” are the ones who have little to lose and everything to gain. The unemployed, the low income families, welfare sustained individuals, the unproductive, those who expect an even larger check at the end of the month.

I think that the story of Robin Hood needs to be clarified once and for all. He’s not a hero. He stands for everything that is wrong with this world. GIVING to the poor is not noble. Just think of that career beggar down your street. He probably makes a couple of thousand a year, he’s comfortable. Or the hoboes in Santa Barbara who travel halfway across the nation because they have the best soup kitchens and hobo hotels. Yet they won’t travel two blocks to find a job.

It’s shameful… WAKE UP!!!! It’s not your responsibility nor your obligation. Give hand-ups, not hand-outs.
